Friendly reminder to all: it is okay to indulge in your favorite comfort foods, whether during the holidays or otherwise! Allowing yourself to enjoy the emotional nourishment of your favorite comfort foods with your loved ones is not wrong, it’s human. It’s only when those occasional indulgences become the daily norm that your body may start to protest; telling you that you've had enough sugar, gluten, dairy, or processed foods in your diet for a while.
One great way to bring your system gently back into a healthy rhythm is by including these everyday detoxifying foods into your diet! No extreme celery juice cleanses or mono-diets necessary.
Most of the foods on my list of top detox foods are called “chelators”. That means that they bind to heavy metals and other toxins that can build up in the body from exposure to environmental toxins and heavily processed foods, and help your body to safely excrete them. All of the foods on this list also contain powerful antioxidant properties, helping to boost the immune system, fight inflammation in the body, and protect against disease and chronic illness in addition to their detoxifying properties.
Start the New Year (and new DECADE!) off on a healthy foot by including these detoxifying foods in your diet. Not sure how to start? Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Add 1 tablespoon of chlorella, spirulina or moringa into your morning smoothie
Add a handful of fresh blueberries into a bowl of oatmeal or yogurt, or frozen blueberries in a smoothie
Make a big pot of curry soup with ginger, turmeric, and fresh cilantro
Top savory dishes with fermented sauerkraut or kimchi, and drink fermented beverages like kefir or kombucha
