What the heck is a "Detox" anyways?

Hello Joule Readers!

I am so honored to be asked to blog for Joule Crafted Nutrition (my new favorite restaurant!)  First, I would like to thank Paul Arnold and Eric Post for making Joule a reality.  Honestly, I feel like they tailor-made this restaurant just for me!  It is everything that I have been looking for and it is also Bliss Detox Approved!

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Abby Bliss White, owner of Bliss Holistic Health, LLC.  I am a certified Health Coach, detox specialist, personal trainer and yogi, and I'm head-over-heels in crazy love with what I do. I believe that sustainable, clean eating and wellness habits generate more pleasure in your life.

I have been leading seasonal (4 times a year) online detoxes- www.detoxwithabby.com  for the past 5 + years and wanted to take a moment to debunk a few myths about detox.

First, I know that word DETOX can turn people off.  I too, was was a total skeptic before I embarked on my first one.  My health journey started off with me being at my heaviest, 35 + lbs more than I weigh today.  I was sad, depressed, and filling that void with alcohol and food. I then went on my first ever diet (Weight Watchers) and became a complete neurotic calorie counter and lost weight but also went to the other side of the spectrum and tried to get down to an unrealistic # on the scale. My happiness hinged on the # on the scale and I although I lost weight I had an unhealthy relationship with food.

THUS, long story short- I embarked on my very first detox and through that process learned that I did not have to count calories or restrict myself if I just ate healthy, nutritious, food.  I started eating seasonally, learned to listen to what my body need and finally learned to have a health relationship with food.  So yes, I am a believer and I think you might be too after I debunk some common myths.

There’s so much conflicting information out there that it can drive you crazy before you even begin a health-oriented program. So today I want to bust a few myths around detoxing, and help you cut through the noise.

Fact or myth? Your body does a perfectly good job of detoxing itself, so you don’t need to detox.

I see this one a lot, and while there’s a grain of truth to it, that’s not the whole story. Your body has systems in place - your kidneys, liver, your gut - that extract toxins from your body and get rid of them in various ways. Even your lungs and skin get in on the action. So why bother with a detox?

Well, it’s like this: the more toxins your body has to get rid of, the longer it takes, and the more they hang around in your body, doing damage. So, to help your body along, you can eat foods that contain little to no toxins, drink plenty of fluids to help your organs flush the system, and boost the whole system with healthy vitamins and nutrients. Make sense? That’s why we do detoxes - to give our body all the support we can while it does its job.

Fact or myth? For a detox to be effective, you need to eat nothing and drink lots of juices.

Total myth! The entire idea is to give your body maximum good nutrition and minimum toxins which it goes about its business. You can give it even more support by making sure your body gets plenty of fiber (to help clear out the toxins in the gut), plenty of fluids (to allow your kidneys to do their job properly) and loads of nutrients to help all the other systems function optimally. If your body is hungry the whole time, it’s not going to do a very good job! Fact or myth? Detoxes have no real benefits.

This one is a myth, too. While there are some detoxes out there that have you starve yourself or rely on just juices, or make you take a bunch pills are powders, A proper detox is designed to maximize your nourishment and minimize your exposure to harmful substances, reduce inflammation in the body, and give you a boost of healthy energy!

The best part is that Joule Crafted Nutrition is completely DETOX friendly. Paul and Eric did not skimp on ingredients and I can send any of my clients/detoxers –with a variety of different dietary needs- to Joule!

We will be having a fun meet-up for my locals at Joule and I would be happy to answer any of your questions or concerns. I aim to educate my clients through a deeper understanding of why different foods can affect the way we feel. The transformation my clients see when they finally learn to cleanse their bodies, treat themselves with love, and balance themselves their own way still rocks my world.

The Bliss Detox system is based on sound nutritional principles. My program is a whole-foods based detox that is safe and effective.  The kinds of foods you eat (yes,  we eat REAL FOOD) during this program are proven to be beneficial to your body in many ways.
